Plant Form AZ-USA.  Drawing made whilst living in Tuscon, Arizona, USA - inspired by the Saguaro cactus that are native to that desert area, and an aspect of Native American culture where large cactus plants are referred as ‘Sentinels of the Desert’.

Limited edition of 10 prints available in A5, A4 & A3

Striding Figure. An imaginary character inspired by a love of the work of the film-maker, artist and musician, David Lynch (USA).

Limited edition of 10 prints available in A5, A4 & A3

Hand. Inspired by an observational drawing made in a museum displaying Etruscan artefacts from the 6th Century.

Limited edition of 10 prints available in A5, A4 & A3

Alien Landscape. Taken from observational drawings of plant forms and reinterpreted and presented as an alien, other worldly, form inspired by a life-long love of Science Fiction (writing, popular culture, cinema).

Limited edition of 10 prints available in A5, A4 & A3

Quad piece: The Stone, The Tank, The Body & Fear. The piece I was given (Rae Durgerian) evoked a sense or feeling of ‘protection’, probably accentuated by the prevailing C-19 situation of anxiety, fear and the need for ‘self-protection’.

Limited edition of 10 prints available in A5, A4 & A3

Aesthetically, the stitching and pattern it presents made me think of chain mail and armour. I have interpreted this theme by placing four images together that individually represent or signify ‘protection’ or ‘defense’, and collectively a feeling of unease, anxiety and wariness – a feeling we have all been experiencing of each other in the socially distanced world we have recently inhabited. Limited edition of 10 prints available in size 40 x 40cm.

Phil Taylor

Phil Taylor is an artist based in Brighton, UK, working primarily with video, photography, drawing and sound. Taylor has shown his work nationally and internationally since graduating from Oxford Brookes University in 1998.

Many of Taylor's time-based projects focus upon specific locations that have an historical event or significance associated with them, such as the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in Oranienburg, Germany or the city of Tucson in Arizona, USA. These works interpret and document the locations whilst also presenting an emotive and personal viewpoint.

“Taylor’s work is thought-provoking, evocative and responds to history, culture and location with powerful resonances”

Review of ‘Losing Ground’ by Karen Gustafeson (University of Texas, Austin, USA), co-curator of the ‘Future Places‘ festival Porto, Portugal – October 2010

Phil Taylor is the founder of Atom Grad – an ongoing recording music project based in the South of England, UK. Three albums have been published to date, encompassing a range of post-punk and ambient genre influences, with collaborations from musicians and writers.
